Jordan Wilkinson has built a diverse artistic portfolio that encompasses festival production, filmmaking, theatre directing, visual arts, community-based art projects and digital storytelling.
Jordan’s artistic career formally began while studying a Bachelor of Creative Industries at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), specialising in film, theatre, production design and literature.
This led him to a 10-month artistic exchange program with the UK’s Leeds University, where he grew a passion for art, culture and events. Jordan brought this knowledge and enthusiasm home, working as an event producer for Somerset StoryFest at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, Gold Coast Film Festival, and developing the now iconic Beach Library activation on Surfers Paradise beach.
With this first-hand event-experience, Jordan pursued his arts practice through the Gold Coast’s Level Up program, presenting an immersive art installation using set design with projected imagery and sound.
A self-confessed cinefile, Jordan has been employed on film projects such as Reef Break, ABC’s Harrow and as an assistant director on Australian auteur, Baz Luhrmann’s, upcoming biopic, ELVIS.
Following his passion for directing, Jordan was accepted into the 2016 Dollar Babies Scheme that saw him adapt, direct and shoot a short film adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘Mute’, which was approved by King himself.
In 2021, he attended the La Boite Theatre Assembly program to create a short-form experimental work in a prominent theatre organisation.
Graduation from his degree coincided with Jordan’s exploration of his sexuality, leading to his acceptance into the competitive GENERATE GC arts and culture program, designed to support the professional development of Gold Coast-based artists.
This program has supported Jordan’s creative development while building a dialogue about inclusive spaces and documenting individual stories from the Gold Coast queer community. This led to development labs with AFTRS, Screen Queensland and USA’s Stowe Story Labs, regarding an LGBTQIA+ web series that Jordan is writing and planning to direct.
Jordan is currently building on his mixed multimedia storytelling skills on the social media team at Baz Luhrmann’s production company, Bazmark.
In 2022, Jordan will also hold a residency at Metro Arts, engaging with other Queensland queer artists to tell their stories through a digital media installation.
