GENERATE GC is a program created by the City of Gold Coast and delivered in collaboration with SITUATE Art in Festivals. Generate GC is designed to develop new site-specific work by Gold Coast artists working on Yugambeh Country.
The program gives (a small cohort of) artists a platform to take creative risks, push boundaries and develop new work that responds to the unique potential of Gold Coast communities and environments.
The focus of the program nurtures, tests and develops ideas for new work in new and unlikely places. It helps support and build artistic practice and career sustainability by providing important pathways to link and connect local and national arts practices with non-profit partnerships, collaborations, and presentation platforms.

PROJECT PROPOSAL & DEVELOPMENT
As Australia's largest regional city, The Gold Coast has a population of over 630,000 people and counting. However, this growing city has no identifiable queer (safe) queer spaces. The last LGBTIQA+ bar was sold off in 2019. So, where does a community of so many diverse people go? For many, they have gone online and for many others coming out means staying in the closet.
This project aims to connect the self-portrait of an artist born and raised on the Gold Coast with a community that is still behind closed doors. The project will conduct a series of community-based activities to engage local queer artists and allies.
The first part of the project is inviting queer people and allies into the artists car where he will provide a curated trip of his childhood in the agricultural landscape of South-East Queensland where they will indulge in conversation with food made on the night the artist came out to his family; and engage with their artistry in lens-based practices.
